Portable Magic: A History of Books and their Readers
Finishes at: Saturday 15 October 4:45 PM
Portable Magic is made for a literature festival. Emma Smith explores the unexpected and unseen consequences of our love affair with books and the written word. The relationship is more reciprocal and turbulent than we might expect, but ‘if you like books, you’ll love this one’. Or so says Scottish crime writer Val McDermid! Emma redefines a classic, looks at the rise of the mass-market paperback and reveals how our reading habits have been shaped by American soldiers. Her writing is passionate, fresh and full of curiosity. Definitely a book-lover’s book!
Professor of Shakespeare Studies at Hertford College, Oxford, Emma spoke at the Festival on This is Shakespeare in 2019. We are delighted to welcome her back.
