Justin Webb

The Gift of a Radio: My Childhood and other Trainwrecks

Starts at: Saturday 15 October 7:30 PM
Finishes at: Saturday 15 October 8:30 PM

On the TV news a lugubrious-looking chap in a light-coloured suit was talking about the balance of payments in a deep, plummy voice. ‘That’s your father,’ Justin Webb’s mother told him, quite unprompted.

Webb grew up in a small house in Bath with a devoted mother and a stepfather described as ‘stark staring mad.’ His childhood was lonely and challenging. But something changed when Sue Lawley read out his letter to Woman’s Hour. Gifts arrived: a radio and a portable typewriter, albeit with keys that stuck. Justin was en route to becoming one of the UK’s most respected journalists.

This frank, funny and moving memoir explores repression, eccentricity and childhood guilt.
