His voice is amongst the best-known on the airwaves and the breadth of his scholarship is equally widely recognised. Yet ‘back in the day’ young Melvyn simply lived above a pub in the Cumbrian market town of Wigton, expecting to leave school, as most did, at 15. This memoir is a celebration of the close-knit community which shaped the young Melvyn Bragg, giving him the strength and encouragement to continue his education and win a scholarship to Oxford. So began the leaving of Wigton.
A long-time champion and promoter of the arts, Lord Bragg of Wigton has written a beautifully lucid elegy to a vanished era, an unforgettable tribute to another time.
