This collection of beautifully personal poems was described as ‘luminous’ by the panel of judges who awarded the work the TS Eliot Prize for Poetry 2022. In Sonnets for Albert we see a return to the autobiographical material explored by Anthony Joseph in his earlier collection Bird Head Son. In this follow-up, he weighs the impact of being the son of an absent, or mostly absent, father, an experience which will resonate with many readers.  Although at times these deeply touching poems threaten to break under the weight of their emotions, they stand firm and upright, always as masterfully poised as the stylish man they depict. This collection celebrates humanity in all its contradictions.

Anthony Joseph is a Trinidad-born poet, novelist, academic and musician. Author of five poetry collections and three novels, he also lectures in Creative Writing at Kings College London.
