Hong Kong, China and All That. In this exclusive discussion between two old friends, Chris Patten reviews his tenure as Governor of Hong Kong with the benefit of hindsight and looks at what has happened since. The diaries from that time provide an unprecedented window into diplomatic negotiation at the highest level but Patten also looks at Hong Kong today - in a passionate polemical essay about China’s increasingly brutal sabotage of the Hong Kong deals.

As well as ensuring the 1997 handover went smoothly, Patten was also tasked with entrenching the rule of law and trying to extend democracy. He was partially successful but there were serious ructions with China along the way, some within Hong Kong itself. Patten’s most withering comments are reserved for Sinophile diplomats in London and for visiting former politicians.

The politics, he said, were a ‘snake pit’.
