Follow the Money: How Much Does Britain Cost?
Finishes at: Saturday 04 November 1:15 PM
This is a forensic examination of the way the state raises and spends £1 trillion of our money every year. And its author, Director of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, is extremely well placed to provide the eye-opening answer to those awkward questions: where does this money come from and where does it go? Why are taxes rising to unprecedented levels, and yet the welfare state still struggles? Why have we neglected the needs of the young for so long? What needs to change?
Despite the seriousness of the subject matter, the book is a surprisingly easy read; the prose is straightforward and witty but also blunt and to the point. Johnson recognises that there are no easy solutions to the current situation and challenges the reader to accept that tough choices are inevitable.
‘…readers may find the content concerning the state of their country’s governance upsetting.’
