Competitions are an integral part of the Wells Festival of Literature, with entries increasing every year. In 2016 submissions arrived from all seven continents – some 861 altogether! Our poetry competition has been running since the Festival began, and our short story competition since 1994. The entries they attract are mostly of an extremely high calibre. In 2016 we added a new category to the mix: A Book for Children. We were delighted with the number and quality of entries for this last year. We also supported a separate initiative run by the Wells Journal: two short story competitions for children.
This year, to celebrate our Silver Anniversary, we have raised the prize money to 1st: £750, 2nd: £300 and 3rd: £200 in all three categories. We are continuing to offer the Hilly Cansdale local poetry prize of £100 and the Wyvern local short story prize, also £100. In addition there will be a £100 local prize in the Book for Children category.
