2024 Book for Children

The winner of our 2024 Book for Children Competition will receive £750. £300 is second prize with £200 being offered as third prize. There is even a prize for the best local writer. Alex Campbell currently writes middle-grade novels under the name Alex Cotter. Her recent novel, The House on the Edge, was selected as a WH Smith Travel Book of the Month and also for the ‘Read for Empathy’ collection. She has also written YA novels and was nominated for the CILIP Carnegie Medal 2016. 

After a degree in English Literature, Alex worked in book PR – from author tours to helping organise The Booker Prize, and for many years worked as a copywriter and communications consultant. Alongside her fiction writing, she lectures in Creative Writing for Young People and has more than ten years’ experience as an editor and mentor.  Her passion is helping young people develop their creative writing talent.  


Make a note: Competitions open on 1 April, and close at midnight on 30 June 2024.
Prize Giving and Poetry Reading takes place on Friday 25 October starting at 10am as part of the Festival.
